Cheap nice sounding exaust
Hey,
For those you out there who are on a budget, I have found a very nice sounding exaust setup that is very cheap. The other morning i was on my way to take an mid term exam and was running early so i decided to stop by the local muffler shop. I got them to cut off my stock muffler and weld in a single piece of pipe. I saw a pile of old tips lying in the corner with just a little rust on them so i asked them to throw one on for me in place of the stock tail pipe. So what i have now is straight pipe with cats and a 3" chrome tip exiting in the stock tailpipe location on a 45* angle. The resulting sound is very pleasing to me. Isn't loud and aggrivating, but sounds very powerful with a low gurgle sound at idle. The whole bit only cost me $40. Jake

Re: Cheap nice sounding exaust
A friend of mine did that here so im waiting to see if he has any burnt valve probs, then i may do mine that way. Another cheapy is to just have someone order a flowmaster muffler seperate then have it welded in. For less then sixty bucks yoou can put a flow 40 or 50 on...jj

Re: Cheap nice sounding exaust
I made the mistake of spending a bit of money on a nice dual flowmaster 40 series setup with 4" tips and as loud and wonderful sounding as it was i wanted somehting that would raise a little more hell. I then installed cutouts and they make all the difference in the world. I'm not complaining about the whole catback being a waste of money because it really adds to the "straight pipes" sound. on cold days i still see a good deal of exhaust gas coming out of my exhaust tips with about half of the exhaust coming from the cutouts. It propbably gives a similar sound as simply removing the muffler as it just bypasses it.....it's also fairly cheap to get done....$35-$75...and only a couple minutes of cutting/welding....

Re: Cheap nice sounding exaust
Also, one of the benefits of getting a cutout instead of just removing the muffler is that when you get sick of the loudness(which eventually happens to everyone, even if only for a few days..lol)you can always cap it up and be back with the stock exhaust(nice and quiet). It also keeps the stock look of the truck for those that like that sorta thing...just my .02

AIRJAM18 do you have any pictures of under the truck how you did your exhaust and how you did your cutouts. Please email them to me at [email protected] thanks what brand cutouts did you buy.

Re: Cheap nice sounding exaust
I think the biggest thing that people get tired of is the drone. I have no annoying drone at all with my truck when i'm in overdrive. What gets old really quick is having turn downs exiting under the bed. They sound awesome but get pretty aggrivatring when you have to crank up the radio or yell at someone to talk to them. With the single tip exiting out the back, the in cab noise is pretty limited even with the straight pipe. As for the possiblilty of burning valves I really doubt that will happen. I still have the cats on my truck which give plenty back pressure. oh well just my .02

Re: Cheap nice sounding exaust
Jake795: Have you notice any lack of low-end torque since you started running straight pipes? with my cutouts open it feels like my truck is a bit more sluggish off the line...up in the higher rpm band there's a definite increase in power but i think i lose on the low end?...any thoughts?

Re: Cheap nice sounding exaust
airjam,
I didn't notice any loss on the low end side. I did notice a nice increase in the mid-range power. I wasn't looking for or expecting any change in power when i did this. Just simply wanted a change in sound. Jake

Re: Cheap nice sounding exaust
gas milage always suffers a drastic decrease following a exaust mod with me. That's simply b/c i'm reving the engine more and getting on it from stops more to hear what it sounds like. But all in all i noticed no differece. If there was one it wasn't much of a change.
