1984 318i fan motor/blower question

Hello,
I know that either the resistor board or the actual fan motor/blower needs to be replaced in my 318, but before I go out and buy either part I would like to see if anyone has had this exact problem. Before the heater stopped working(blowing) it started making a loud clicking noise when the car was going. I was able to make this clicking stop if I turned the heater on to 4 real quickly. It made this noise for about a month before it stopped working all together. Has this happened to anyone else? I would like to find out before I spend close to $200 for a whole new motor, it would be nice to be able to just buy the resistor board if that's all it needs...
