2000 323i 4Dr sound system upgrade help

I am looking for some advice as to how to upgrade the sound system in my 2000 323. Anyone have a package that they put together that they would want to share with me. I want to be able to drop speakers without modification, and come away with better than Harmon Karden system sound (my car does not have Harmon Karden). I am looking for cd/am/fm/mp3/xm(ok but not necessary) unit and would add and amp if necessary. Not sure if I need subwoofers but would be willing to listen. Anyway I heard this forum has some smart 3 series people, so I thank anyone who can help.

well this is what i found that would be inexspensive. and add great sound to your bemmer, if your looking for more thats not factory for bmw than there are many other things visit a car toys or best buy

what ever you do don't remove your stock radio it's worth more than and after market radio plus its trash once its out no one can use it because of the codes.

you can remove you stereo . . . Just keep it so when you happen to trade it in for the E90 . . you can put back in the stock radio. . . . LOL

First off . . what it your budget?

I may not change the stock radio/cd unit based on your advice people, but I would replace the stock speakers and add the subwoofer. My budget would be about 1000.00 but I would like to stay under. I would most like to use drop in replacement speakers. Will I need to add and amp? I have and Ipod what should I use to add it to the system? Thanks for all the suggestions.
