Re: 91 crown vic wont throw fire from coil

check for pulsing ground on ground side of coil while cranking; no pulse=no spark, probably ignition module

If you have a 5.0 engine, the ignition module on the side of the distributor is bad. I had one that was flaky, some days it would run others it ran terrible. Of couse it had to die on the worst weather day we had, causing my dad to have to walk about 2 miles in the pouring rain off the Interstate. I belive there is even a recall for it, depending on the year of the car.(1988-91 I think)

Check the wiring connector around the power steering pump. These were bad about corroding and the connector disintergrating. It carries all the wires that go to the coil.

Just for giggles, start disconnecting each componet that is controlled by or sends a signal to the PCM. I have seen sensors short out and take the voltage to ground. Don't forget the cannister purge valve under the battery. Good luck.

Re: 91 crown vic wont throw fire from coil

One Item you have not replaced and these go out just as much as the module, and that is the Crank Posistion Sensor. It is located on either the left or right side on the block at about 11 or 1 O'clock position by the harmonic balancer. It is nothing more than a wire wrapped magnet that picks up a pulse every time the metal passes it, there is a plate mounted behind the damper with 4 prongs on it that set the timing. If that is bad there will not be a trigger pulse sent to the module to fire off the coil. Since you replaced the top end parts, you have eliminated another cause of no spark, that is the module inside the distributer that the module on the side plugs into.

Note, some cars have this, some dont. Some use the stator and pickup inside the distributer, some use the CPS, some use both. Another thing to do is check for codes, you can pickup a scan tool for the old fords dirt cheap. You count the pulses and pauses to read the code, or you can jumper the connector and read the check engine light the same way, but I dont remember the jumper points.
