facory subwoofer

We have a 2002 sub LT w/ onstar and NO bose system. It does have a factory subwoofer in the rear drivers side panel. (cargo area) My question is whether the factory subwoofer can be easily replaced with an aftermarket one. I pulled the panels off to get a look at it and didnt want to go any futher. It looks like an 8" woofer. Has anyone replaced theirs? and with what brand? How many watts does the factory system send to the subwoofer? Is there a seperate amp somewhere? Thanks for any info you have!!

Re: facory subwoofer

Well, let me ask what are you looking to gain? The biggest obstical in Gm stereos is the stereo itself. They use cheap parts and have to do things to keep them from falling apart. Have you ever noticed that the stereo produces less bass the more you turn them up?

You can ungrade the 8" to a 10" with little work but then you'll have to get a better amp, line level converters and such. Replacing the stereo will help a lot.

Re: facory subwoofer

Hi, it is an 8" and some people have replaced them. There may be something about it in this forum, I don't remember. Another location for a sub is the compartment between the front seats. There are companies making kits for that, too.
I have the same vehicle and stereo as you do, and the bass is adequate, but not great. Have you tried the 'Rock' sound setting?
You will need a LOT more power to make it thump and shake, so this will be a major investment, can be thousands of $$, plus you will end up with a big, 3 feet wide subwoofer box stuck into the cargo area.
Take care, Eggert

Re: facory subwoofer

Eggert, It doesn't take much power at all. Also, depending what all you want to do, you should be able to make that baby rumble nicley for well under $1k. Actually, if just messing with the sub, $300-$500 should be plenty. Oh, also with today's subs, one high powered 10" woofer in a box barely enough to cover the sub is all the space you need.

Re: Re: facory subwoofer

I have added 2 pair of Polk 6750 components to the front and rear doors with excellent results. We arent looking for the "thump" factor....just want to replace the blown factory subwoofer with something with a little more kick. We dont want to replace the head unit because of the rear controls for the kids....they can listen to a cd while we listen to the radio... Thanks again for your help..
