Replacing CV Halfshaft
Hey guys
First time poster. Looks like a great forum. Perhaps you can help me out. I have a '92 Cherokee that starts to shimmy and shake at about 50 to 55 miles an hour. It also grinds on tight left turns. I'm thinking the CV Halfshaft needs replaced. Any other guesses? Any tips for making this repair? Thanks! |

Doesnt have a halfshaft. Could be wheel bearings, could also be the knuckle at the wheel hub. As far as the shimmy at 50-60 sounds like to me wheel balance is off. Get the front tires balanced and then see if it still does it. |

Tires first for the 50-60 shimmy.... On the tight left turn....what kinda of grinding...there is a stopping point on the steering mechanism....have somebody look to see if there is rubbing from supension or steering stop mechanism. Or even power steering issues. |

Re: Replacing CV Halfshaft
To check your bearings just simply jack up that tire about 1" or so off the ground. Grab the tire and see if there is any side to side play, over-all looseness to the tire. Also look at your steering components to see that they are tight while moving the tire side to side. Also check your ball joints too, with the tire up, place your jack handle under the tire and lift up on the tire, have a friend watch the baljoints for movement. They should be tight, if they move up and down then you need to find a GOOD shop to replace them. WARNING! If they are bad, makesure that they put it on the alignment machine first! This sounds odd, but to get the proper caster/camber settings they need to know what balljoint to install.( Caster/camber is set by offset balljoints usually +/- a certian degree to get your alignment correct. Good luck.
