Ticking Noise/Timing Belt

I have a V-6, when starting the engine cold, I get a ticking noise, which sounds like a spark jumping (it isn't). I can give the timing belt a quick shot of WD-40 and the noise goes away. It does not do this when starting the engine warm or hot. The engine only has 23K on it, the belt is in good condition both sides, and the idler is clean. You cannot hear the noise inside the cab when starting, only if standing outside. What is causing this????

Re: Ticking Noise/Timing Belt

More than likely your PCV... Second, you don't have a timimg belt, you have a timing chain... What you're spraying is the serpentine belt and WD40 will eventually break it down.

Re: Ticking Noise/Timing Belt

Your correct, it is the serpentine belt. I have install a new PCV, that's not it. As far as the WD-40, I only did this a couple of times, with about 1 sec. burtst. I thought it would get to the belt. The Chev. dealer cannot help. All I get out of them is, "Almost all S-10's do it". I can't buy that. I have been to several places and still no one can give me the answer, except, "we can replace the belt". That's like throwing darts, hoping to hit on what it may be. I have been told, "Drive it, can't hurt anything". I suppose not. It's been doing this a couple thousand miles now.

Re: Ticking Noise/Timing Belt

well first off i have to yell, pretend its all capitalized, wd-40 is no form of a lube. and never ever ever be used as on, especally on rubber, it will eat the rubber away, get some belt ease for the serpentine belt, on calm voice now, change the serpentine belt because of the wd 40, and usually (dont know if i cant hear it) a click click click sound is lifters not having oil up to them, check the oil level, if its low, put more in it, then figgure out why, im not asken if youve seen oil laying around, just check it, or it could the the "fan noise" and if it is the fans sound, its kind of like a rubbing, then yes, most s 10's do make that noise, in fact most vehicals do after a while, you can either A. leave it, its not hurting nothing, or be replace the fan and fan clutch, pain in the ass, or if you dont do it, expencive and not worth it, hope ive helped, and please never again lube anything with something ment to display water, and took 40 times to get it right

No belts should be lubed with anything. Ever. Period. WD-40 disolves plastic and rubber.

dmbrisket 51, did you buy one of the 50th aniversary cans too?

Re: Ticking Noise/Timing Belt

I don't use it a lot either, I like the PB Penetrating Catalyst myself, WD-40 is good for spraying one wet electrical connectors tho... just gotta be careful of the plastic housing. THe 50th aniversary can has a bunch of history on WD-40, the 40th attempt was one of them. Never knew anyone who knew what the 40 meant that didn't see it on the can.

I'd love to have one of the 50th aniversary Corvettes too, I may go buy one... in 20 years when they're down to what I can afford

since you found sound related to belt, by spraying it ... only ticking when belt and engine cold ... logical guess seems related to tension on belt which is different cold or warmed up ... i think belt stretches bit warmed up so less tension then with no noise ... slack off tension if you can ... maybe the idler bearing worn and ticking until warmed up. orother pully bearing. clutch in a/c compresor known to do this too when not enagaged.

Unhappy

First, I didn't spray enough to really harm the belt......but I did spray some belt conditioner on it, and the ticking is still there. It only last for about 15-30 seconds.
When I get my mechanic friend over here, I think the thing to do is loosen the tensioner. However, the marks on it shows it to be in the right tension. Maybe I'll just have to live with it.

Re: Ticking Noise/Timing Belt

like i said earlyer, if its a fast (with the pace of the moter) click click click, your lifters dont have oil up there, switch to 5w30, if it seams to be once every time the engine goes around, then its the fan clutch, live with that one
