Gentlemen,
My 740i has a cycling rumble that seems to be getting worse as time goes on. It is worst when the car is cold and is most pronounced at 1800 to 2600 RPMs. It is definitely coming from some component of the drive train. I have experienced this kind of thing in other rear wheel drive cars and it has been the U joints at either end of the drive shaft. Have you ever experienced this type of thing with the 740 previously and if so, what are your thoughts? Anything that this car is famous for as it approaches 100K miles? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks. Tony |

I had the same problem
At 130K my 94 740i had the a vibration around 20 - 25 mph and again around 50 - 60 mph.
The problem was the center bearing and the drive shaft. It was about $850 to repalr. A lot of bmw E32s have this problem. So much so that if there's only a slight vibration, many mechanics consider it normal for this model. But excessive vibration indicates a problem. I've also read that on the Internet a company that sells an alternative to the BMW drive shaft. You might want to investigate that a bit. Good Luck, Al |
