305 to 400 swap
hey. i'm a relative newbie to this and have a few questions about swapping my buddy's 400 sbc into my 79 camaro. my major delima is that he has an auto and i have a standard trans. From what I've found (from nastyz28.com) a stock 305 has a 10.34" clutch, which won't fit any aftermarket externally balanced flywheels that I have found. Also, I've heard that I may have to replace the starter motor. I've also seen 400 balancing plates for sale, but can't find any solid info about them and how they work. So... I'm trying to avoid buying a new flywheel, starter, and clutch, so would you guys help me out? What about buying an internally balanced crank, like this one --> http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...&category=33616
Also, what's the deal with 153 tooth vs 168 tooth flywheels. Thanks |

Re: 305 to 400 swap
well, the ebay link doesn't work. I'd think that a new clutch/flywheel and starter (if needed) would be cheaper than a good aftermarket crank. Not sure about the fitment issue with your stock clutch, and I've never heard of a good reason for the different tooth count on the flywheels/flexplates. Just one of GM's little mysteries I guess. Good luck opn the swap. I have 400 block I am considering putting in my 91 305tbi. I't an auto, so I shouldn't hve the problems you are.
