99 Corolla Tachometer

Hi,

I did a search but couldn't find anything specifically for this car. I have a 99 Corolla CE without a tachometer. Is it possible to swap out the
whole instrument cluster with the one for the LE (it has a tach and the layout is different) and have everything work? Do I have to do any rewiring?

Thanks.

Re: 99 Corolla Tachometer

Yes, it will work. I did this to my 99 and it was a direct replacement. Just one thing in the tach there is a digital readout for outside temp and it takes a temp sensor to make it work that the CE and VE do not come with. They are wired for the sensor but if you want the temp readout to work you will need the sensor. Toyota wants about $45 for one, ouch! I got mine from the person on ebay that was selling the dash. The sensor is mounted right in front of the raditor and plugs into a two wire connector.

hope this helps, wrenchdad

ps I went ahead and install white face reverse glow gauge faces on mine before I install the dash.

Cool. Thanks. What about the odometer reading? Will it be the same since it's digital (I assume the mileage is saved in the ecm or something).

Re: 99 Corolla Tachometer

No the mileage is stored in the dash not in the car's ECU so that will change.

any way to change that? like just change out the odometer or the speedometer? I haven't taken apart mine so I don't know if you
can just take pieces that you need or if it is an all or nothing kind
of thing.

Re: 99 Corolla Tachometer

I didn't try because the dash that I swapped in was just about the same mileage so it didn't matter to me. But I guess its possible that you could swap your speedometer into the new dash, I'm just not sure if they are the same, I am thinking that they would be, I'm thinking it would be a cost issue with Toyota to make a completely different speedometer just for a different model car. You will just have to take a look at it and see. Sorry I can't give your a better answer than that.
