2000 windstar\heater core

Want to replace or at least check the heater core. I have never tackled this job, ford says it takes 2.3 hrs so i'm guessing at least 6! Anyone that can walk me through this would be appreciated!

Re: 2000 windstar\heater core

I've removed the heater core to do other work, .... what I can't remember is: does the radio and all that trim panel stuff around/below the radio have to be removed? Maybe not.

The heater core is lying flat inside the plenum assembly just behind the radio area. It rests inside a plastic cover. The cover is about the size of a large city phone book. The cover is held in place by SEVEN screws ... and the seventh one is against the firewall... not easy to find.
Don't try to remove the cover and then the heater core. Much trouble. The cover and heater core are to be removed TOGETHER.

You're right ...about 6 hours should do it.

Tip#1: To access the hose connections on the firewall (in the engine area), you will probably find it easier to remove the wiper arms and cowling.

Tip#2: To avoid dumping coolant on your carpet from the heater core when removing ... stuff wadded paper towels into inlet/outlet tubes of heater core.
