2000 Honda Passport - which oil

Which oil do ya'll use for your Rodeos/Passports. I have been using Mobil 1 0w-30, which some said might help the valve clicking, but it is rather expensive, rather use another kind, but wanted an opinion first. 5w-30 or 10w-30 weight.

Depends on the temp in your location. If it gets really cold then 5W-30 if not then 10W-30 should be ok. I actually switch for summer and winter because of the drastic differences in temp here in the midwest. The stuff you are using now is synthetic, if your going to switch to regular fossil oil then you need to keep on your 3000 mile changes.

I have been experimenting with oil and filters. Right now I am using Penzoil with a Bosh filter, I was using standard Mobile oil and it did well but I don't like the filter. I am going to try the Purolator filter this time around and see how it performs, but I avoid the Fram's. Still going to use the Penzoil though as a control for my experiment. But from what I have read on here any decent quality oil is ok as long as you stay up on your changes, don't go a mile over 3000. You can see a comparison on popular brands here:

It's really up to you. I will update on my new oil and filter configuration as soon as I can.

Depending on ambient temps, isuzu specs anything from 5w-30 to 20w-50. Like iskiuskiweski, i've experimented a bit with my 2002 3.2L. Currently I'm running havoline 5w-20 and a carquest (wix) filter. Trying to see if the 5w-20 helps any with fuel consumption. My rodeo runs smooth & quiet on it so far, but the weather has been too bad to even try to measure MPG

. I'll probably go to a 5w-30 for spring & summer.

I have always run 10W-30 Havoline since I bought it with 11K miles.

If I'd have bought it in Colorado, where winters can dip below 20 degrees, I would have started with 5W-30. But I didn't bring the truck to a colder state til it already had 90K miles; it's first 90K where spent in Las Vegas, NV.

I don't have any leaks, knock on wood - but am afraid to go to a thinner oil on a somewhat higher mileage vehicle.

I use to use Bosch oil filters for the longest time, tried 1 STP filter - NEVER again, truck ticked like crazy, and it's never been a ticker.

After going back to OEM Isuzu filters, 2 years ago, I'll never change again. Kind of mad at myself for not staying with OEM filters anyway. Oil pressure is very consistent, and just seems to like them better. Doesn't even have that tick on a very cold morning, that nearly all vehicles are famous for.

Agree with all others, do NOT go over 3K miles before changing oil/filter - these engines NEED and WANT consistantly clean oil. Regular changes should help ward off that famous Isuzu TICK!

Another thing is to get that engine good and hot before dumping the oil, helps get the crud out - careful though, it will SPLASH everywhere.

Where do you get your OEM filters? Are you ordering them from St. Charles or local dealer? I have been experimenting with different filters and still haven't found one that I would call the best.

Tynan's Isuzu in Aurora/Denver, CO. Highly recommend them over all others, in the past I regularly used Bosch, but have also used Napa, AC Delco, STP, Fram (only on 2 occasions, before I knew better), and one Mobil 1 filter.

Bosch is my 2nd recommendation, and then the Napa brand.

Do not like the AC Delco, pressure fluctuated too much.

STP and Fram I do not recommend at all.

Leary of the Mobile 1 filters; have heard people say they have blown up and destroyed their engines.

So I went back to OEM, and wish I had stayed all along. They are a bit $$ more, but worth the consistent oil pressure reading, as well as a very quiet engine, and they were designed for these engines.

May I ask why some of you have recommended NOT to use or prefer NOT to use FRAM oil filters? I have always used FRAM filters in all of my subaru cars, and now have used them in the past year in my 2000 Passport. I am curious to what your reasons are.

Many of their filter part #'s are build considerably less robust than other filter brand names. Frams *typically* have less filtering media, have leaky, cheaply made internal bypasses and anti drain-back seals, + have the filtering media glued to cardboard end caps as opposed to steal (internal) end caps used by other filter manufacturers. Fram's outer cans can easily be crushed by hand as well (most of thier filter #'s) They will protect your automotive application just fine, but for the same, or less money you can get better built filters. Wix (napa, carquest), champion labs, purolator, etc.. are heavier built filters. Compare a napa or carquest isuzu 3.2/3.5 to a fram & you will see for yourself.

Currently I'm running mix 50/50 of chevron 5w-30 and exxon 5w-20 and AC 1127 filter plus 5 oz. of Valvoline Synpower Oil Treatment(VSOT) . There is a lot of moly in Exxon superflo 5w-20 and other stuff in VSOT help also. My engine runs smooth & quiet. The oil pressure when cold about 80psi but it drop to like 40@2500rpm when warm up. I'll go to a chevron 10w-30 for spring & summer and I still have couple more bottle
of valvoline stuff(red and silver) to use .

I am now finding that I don't like the Penzoil motor oil. I have been getting a little lifter tick on cold start ups, that I didn't get with the cheaper Mobile oil. I may try the Havoline next time and see how that does or maybe just stick with the Mobile. I will say from past experience that I avoid Quaker State because it seems to cause that nasty waxy build up of sludge, I believe that it is parafin based, and that is what causes the build up.

Last summer I tried penzoil long life 15w-40 to see if it would quiet the noisey valvetrain the 1998+ 3.2's have. It sure did run quiet & smooth, but I lost a mile or two per gallon (fuel mileage), so next change I went back to 10w-30. Penzoil is actually a pretty good oil these days (strong additive pack), long gone is the rumors of sludge or wax from that oil

. Havoline is also an excellent oil. All in all, if you dump it every 3-5K miles, any brand will do.

My oil of choice is castrol gtx 10w-30 usually get the DRIVE HARD oil. I have had absolutely no problems with using this oil, no clicking, leaks, noise, oil pressure loss, nothing. Everything is ok. My 2 cents again.
