I know this is a late answer for your question but sometimes people still cant find out the answer. I just have similiar problems with my 96 S-10 with a 2.2L and 5-spd manual. It will start up and take right off in gear, but you cant change with the vehicle running. I replaced the slave cylinder in my transmission and it works great now. The part will cost about 150 bucks if its an interior slave cylinder (likely) and you will need to remove the transmission bellhousing. If it's exterior it could be anywhere from 35-70 bucks but its right outside the transmission for an easier replacement. Hope you get the fix for your truck!
