Question Prelude engine Problems

I have a 97 model VTiR Prelude Automatic/tiptronic. we recently swapped the origional H22A DOCH VTEC motor with another H22a but from an earlier model prelude. Both engine basically look identicle.

The problem is when we try to rev it past 5500 rpm it sounds like it rev limits and won't go past 5500, which is when VTEC should come on. We put a VTEC controller on the car, and brought VTEC on earlier and it comes on fine. but still won't go past 5500.

Can anyone Please help, or have any idea's on what the problem may be?

Sounds like the ECU is not liking something. I dont know if the 4gs and 5gs use the same ECU but you might want to check up on that. Normally the rev limit is set/raised by re-programming the computer.

possibly a distributer problem, had a similar problem in my crx, wouldn't rev pat 3500 when I tried to use a newer distributer, other than that it ran just fine

the 4th and 5th gens do have different computers.. the engines are almost identicalso i doubt the ecu would be to blame it would cause a problem though. are you sure the engine you got is any good?

Ask Honda

The ECU is basically the same but different in certain ways and the two run seperate fuel values between the 4th and 5th gen engines. Im thinking that if it is like a rev limiter at 5500rpm it may be that the fuel tables are not the same match for either setup?
Have you checked the airfuel ratio at low, mid, and full load and cross checked it with the ignition timing.
Is it certainly 5500 rpm because I once had a dicky lead that would miss fire at full load?
Anyhow why did you change engines and who did the operation???
Also honda may help??

P.S. If the timing and values are screwed up is your vtec controller also a fuel curve adjuster. If a ECU change is to radical it may be the case of a custom chip.

All the best :flash:
