Hey Everyone,
My Grand Am GT 3.4L has about 120,000 miles and I want to get some opinions on using the oils made for high milage cars. Has anyone been using these oils? If so, what is your opinion? Someone I've talked to suggested that there may be extra parafins added, I don't know if this is true or not. What do you think? |

Re: Oil for high milage Grand Am GT 3.4L ???
We started using a Hi-mileage blend on our 96' GA. I believe it was Quaker State, although I think Pennzoil has it too. Never noticed any problems. They do have extra additives, but I don't know if they are paraffin-based.

Re: Oil for high milage Gramd Am GT 3.4L ???
On my previous car a 94 prism once I hit 100k I switched to Valvoline high mileage, I can’t say that I noticed any difference. I had no engine trouble prior and I put another 50k on it prior to selling. I can say that I did not lose gas mileage as the mileage increased, but that could be true with the synthetic oil that I was using prior if I had not switched. I could have just been sucked in by the marketing dept at Valvoline.
Since I have had my 04 GA from oil change one I've been using AMSoil. They claim that you can go 7,500- 25,000 miles between changes. My change oil light did not come on until after I put 9,800 miles on the oil. I am on the second change now and have over 14,000 miles on the engine. Granted it is 90% highway since I travel for work. What is everyone averaging out there in mileage between oil changes? Do you wait for the change oil light to come on or do you stick with the 3,000 mile bench mark? |

Re: Oil for high milage Grand Am GT 3.4L ???
I always go 3-5K between changes religiously. Cheapest and best thing ya can do is keep fresh blood and kidney [oil filter, lol] to keep it pumping.

Re: Oil for high milage Grand Am GT 3.4L ???
I don't think the new Hi-mileage oils will hurt your engine at all, but as above, if you change oil and filter regularly, as long as it is a good brand, same-same as far as I've seen.
