Any Ideas 730SEi 1988

Hi there,

My (trusty!) BMW 730e 1988 broke down yesterday and I'd really appreciate some help/advice.

After driving 400 miles round trip on the motorway (it was raining all day!) the yellow abs light appeared on the dash... I ignored for about 2 mins.... then the steering felt juddery... until the power steering packed in all together. I managed to indicate into a layby... whereupon my indicators packed up and then the engine cut out.

I tried to restart, but the engine would not fire... I left it for about 10 mins and all seemed fine... I managed to drive for about 2 miles before it all happened again.

Do any of you know how I can fix this... or where to begin to look.

I sat in the car today with my fingers crossed... and again... the 1st sign of trouble was the abs light... closely followed by the power steering going juddery.

All advice appreciated.

Thanks

Might just be a plug...

Hi!
I had a similar problem a couple of years ago.
I was driving one night and the lights in my car started dimming and the ABS light lighted up on my instrument cluster.Soon, no more battery and the car shut off. The car didn't want to start. I waited 20 minutes and tried again and , by my surprise, the car started. I tried getting home and my car gave up on me again with the same symptoms.I eventually got home and checked the engine compartment the next day. I found an electric plug ( if a remember correctly, it was a bit to the left under the oil filter reservoir ) that i think was somehow connected the the alternator i think. I don't quite remember ... anyway, I plugged it back in the female connector which wasn't to far from it and that fixed the problem.

I hope this helps.

hey bud
if your abs light or brake light comes on and your power steering is messing up and maybe your brakes are feeling weird I bet you a hundred bucks its the power steering pump ,if it sound really bad but some what drivible, sort of sound like a diesle and its making noise from the drivers side under the master cylinder ya i would say power steering pump
the reason the brake light or abs light is on is cuz the power steering pump powers the hydraulic brake system (abs) and if the pump goes both your steering and brakes go
I had one priced in alberta canada at bmw and it was like 750! used it was 200 but i found one through partsource (local part store) and it was 250$ (new) so dont go to bmw and shop around, if they say they cant get it, some one will
