I bought my car from BMW last year. It was certified pre-owned. Needless to say it is a year later and they are replacing the engine. I have had soooo many problems with the car and they couldn't figure out what was causing all the leaks and overheating they have decided to replace the engine. At first I was told it was new, but then when he clarified he said it was refurbished? Isn't that a world of difference?

Refurbished simply means they (or some one else) have "Rebuilt" the engine. find out how much was rebuilt. Sometimes only rings(piston),bearings,and gaskets are done. Or they could reuse some parts of the old ones that are still within mfg's specs and only replace ones that are needed to fix the problem. Have them extend the warr.!! Also it really depends on who's doing the work. Refurbished technicaly means "brought back to like new condition"

Debbie, assuming that a genuine BMW dealer is doing this under the terms of BMW's CPO warranty, you'll be getting an engine that has been rebuilt to the highest standards in the industry. The only thing better would be a brand spanking new engine right off the BMW assembly line; however, have no fear or concerns about the quality of the engine that you are getting.
Now, if it's NOT a Bimmer Dealer, all bets are off! Good luck!
