1996 Escort LX

I really dont know a whole lot about cars but I need help with this because it's draining me of money because I keep paying people to fix it and nobody can seem to. Okay..The car cranks great and idles great..but when you put it in drive it doesn't move, it's like it's still in park. But when you slide it down in reverse, it will go in reverse. Anyone know anything about this? Is it the transmission, computer, or something? Thank you for anyone who helps me with this.
