I have a 1990 Honda Civic, sedan, 1.5L, 130K miles which started to overheat yesterday. The temp gauge climbed to the red bar on 'Hot' then would intermittently drop to normal range for a moment before climbing back up over and over. So I figured it was the thermostat getting stuck and would intermittently open when the pressure got to a certain point hence the intermittent drop in the temp guage. Well I changed the thermostat and gasket today, refilled the fluid coolant level, and took it for a spin. Wouldn't you know it, within 3 blocks...same problem. Popped the hood, the radiator fans are blowing like mad and everything is hot. What else should I consider?

I had the same problem myself.. i had a air pocket in my coolant system, nextime u go out and start ur car up check and see if ur return line from (side) of the head to the radiator is hot.. if it isnt try putting more coolant into ur car and squeeze the hose that connects to the top of ur rad and after u squeezed and it filled try swueezing the return hose hope that works for ya.

Re: Yep...overheating again!
There is a nut to bleed the air out of the system at the return line near the head, might make it easier to get all of the air out.

Re: Yep...overheating again!
if you've been working with hondas much at all you'll learn real quick once your car starts to overheat your head is going to wrap real fast and destroy the headgasket while its at it... I'd check the thermostat, and run a compression test if i were you, and make sure your coolant is filled properly.

Re: Yep...overheating again!
yup you need to bleed the air out of the system first or else it will overheat

make sure that the hot water valve is open (turn heater knob to hot) when filling/bleeding.
