Burning smell 99 GCL
Every time I stop, I can smell oil burning, I can't seem to locate the source of the leak. But sometimes, the fluid (oil suspected, but auto tranny?) seems to drip on the left side heat shield.
There's no smokey smoke, just the smell. I've got 139K mi., I have noticed some leaks (more like once a week, a few drops at best) on the tranny bottom pan, but if it was the rear main seal, would it leak on the left side heat shield, seems to far back or in the wrong position (middle versus side). I want to say the tranny pan is "greasy looking", but my tranny fluid level is fine. Oil level hard to say since it's the usual burn-off, can't see it, and no blue smoke from the pipes, either hot or cold. Question: due to work scheduling, I can't get into a garage this week for inspection. The problem started about a week ago. Is it unsafe to drive it, possible engine fire? What could be some issues going on? If it is the rear main seal, how hard to fix or replace? Cost? Sorry, I'm travelling on the road and can't get to a computer unless I see a library or one of those internet coffee shops...I may stop in for a few minutes, then it's "on the road again". Thanks, guys!! |

That's asking a lot. Leaks, smells are hard enough to diagnose even when the car is right in front of you.
I've never heard of an engine catching fire because of a oil leak, BUT, if its getting hot enough to cause an odor, I would get it checked out ASAP. Since you're on a road trip, its probably even more urgent since oil leaks may only get worse and running out of oil on the road is never a plus. It could also be a brake caliper hanging up, dragging and over heating. Check out every wheel for odors and excessive heat after driving. |
