RPM drops below 1k when wheel turns

Ok ppl this is a real head scratcher , it seems that everytime i turn my steering wheel all the way to the left or right the power steering pump begins to make a loud draining sound after 3-4 seconds of this sound the engine rpm starts to drop bellow 1k sometimes even stalls, no other systems were on (lights, heater, radion, ive no ac so that cant be it :P) anyone have any clue what this might be cause i sure as hell am stumped thx guys for any imput ^^
ps: my sunfire is a 2000 2.2l with 62k on it in case that helps.

Re: RPM drops below 1k when wheel turns

check your power steering fluid, Its not uncommon for a vehicles RPM to drop when you turn the wheel one direction to the other it places more load on the drivebelt, correct me if i'm wrong. But if it is dropping dramatically, only with the power steering pump, Try turning on the ac, then try a lot of accessories, if that has no effect, my best guess is that either the drivebelt is goin south in some strange way, or your power steering pump is going bad which is putting some stress on the drivebelt slowing things down. Another thought, this is just a thought, but have your alternator tested as maybe by putting load on the drivebelt with the power steering pump it is copping out your electrical which wouldn't be evident while driving because of the speed. I dunno hope maybe this helps, it's kinda confusin me too, let me know what happens.

power steering fluid is fine, looks to me like the pump is making the engine stall thats what i feels like to me. i tested the the alternator and nothing seems to be off. i dont have ac but i tried everything else on lights etc. and the car ran fine it only goes hay wire when the power steering is in use. so im guessing its like you said either the belt is going bad in some weird way that ive never seen b4 or the power steering pump is bitting the dust im waiting on my mechanic hes going to take a look at this stuff for me later right now all he had time to do is check the alternator. thx hopeless4life at least now i can rule out alot of other things and get to working on the problem ^^
