2001 XTERRA 2WD need 4WD
Hello. I just purchased a 2001 Xterra 2WD and would like to convert it to a 4WD. What should I do? Go through the dealership? Look for after market kits? Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance. John |

Sell the 2WD!
Sell the 2WD! Buy the 4WD! It'll be cheaper! You'll spend $10,000 changing it over!

Go back to the dealer and trade it in. It will cost you more money to convert it to 4wd AND you'll lose your warranty. So why did you buy a 4x2 if you wanted a 4x4?

Yeah, I know it will cost alot.
I traded in a 2000 grand cherokee that had a horrendous lease on it. The only model the dealer could get me into was the 2001 2wd. I tried to get the 2002 4x4 but they couldn't do it even though I have good credit. I was underwater about 13K on my Jeep because an old lease got roled in - yes I was stupid. Am I correct that you are in western washington? Do you know a good dealer that could work with me? I purchased at Nissan of Fife. Thanks for the help. |

I purchased from Puyallup Nissan. Dealers are all the same.............sharks feeding on the chum! I know It cost me $7000 to close my lease on my '96 Maxima, over mileage, blah, blah...........I will NEVER lease again! It sounds like you are just stuck in a bad deal? Sorry!

Good luck working with a dealer. I just got out of a lease and got hit for $1500. Sounds like I was lucky. Will never lease again.
Again, good luck. |

By all means if you're committed to doing this, don't try and replicate the factory suspension. For the trouble it will take, you should go ahead and build up a solid axle front end using a Dana 44 or the like. You'll be the first too!

I'd say your best bet it to find a dealer who will work with you and try a trade in. If you have any aspirations of building your truck for hardcore wheeling take Brent's advice. Dog
