Custom bumper stuff

Hey guys.

I'll be working on the next step of the bumper to get the tire carrier working. One thought I had was to make bushings out of UHMW nylon like this guy did. Should keep friction down and rust from forming where the paint wears away.

Any ideas, comments?

Who's "this guy"?

I think a link or a picture didn't go through on your post (I see the white box w/a red "X" symbol).

That looks funny. He's got this perfect bumper (KMA could learn something here!) and an old dented up, uh, what is that thing, a Scout?

My only real concern is where the swing arm latches. I do want to protect the arm and the plate it latches to at that point. I don't expect the pivot point to be a problem beyond the very small ring I have there and there's no room to fit anything in there anyway.

BTW, I bought some glazing putty to fill those two tiny holes in your bumper. I don't know your plans, but I have to work on Saturday. If you want help though, I should be available on Sunday.

Oh, and that tire mount gave me an idea or two! More on that later!

Re: Custom bumper stuff

Schlud,

Are you working on a rear bumper for production of some type? It would sure be nice if someone could develop a rear bumper like that, but make it tough enough to handle a receiver hitch so we can eliminate the angle robbing add-on hitches and get that miserable spare tire out back where it belongs. I've heard such bad things about the KMA bumper, I would like to see something come about that is well made. I've said it before, somebody makes one of those, and I am a buyer!

Sorry Gordon. It's not a new design.

It's just after all the $$$ I'll be spending on this bumper to fix it, I am no longer going to refer to it by it's manufacturers name.

I'll start calling it my Mann's Bumper since their shop did all the corrective work, and did a nice job.

Yes, it's a Scout. It's one of the guys from the NW4x4 mailing list. I might find out where he got the job done since it looks very clean. Might be handy to know in the future.

Let's get those tire carriers done right. I would like to have it functional for the Bend, Oregon PNWX trip. Sunday might be doable.

Nylon bushings sound like a good idea to me.

I refuse to refer to my bumper as a KMA product ... in fact, I want to put a Skid Row sticker on it at some point ...
