To it's credit, it did last a few years
The shitty emachines I picked up for cheaper than shit has proved the saying "You get what you pay for". Anyway, all attempts at reloading windows in any form to include a complete hard drive wipe and system restore have failed.
If I pulled the just hard drive and replaced it would that at least give me a blank slate to work with? The rest of the hardware seems workable enough, the hard drive itself in good condition, just irrevocably loaded with a completely nonfuctional OS. Would I need an identical replacement harddrive or would just about anything work?

Re: To it's credit, it did last a few years
i used to have an e-machine firewall. e-machines motherboard hanging in a compaq case that i got from a dumpster in the back of radio shack. a 20GB hard drive out of a Tivo that I cracked open IN THE STORE and stole.
I had over a year and a half of uptime on that box. Redhat 6.2 with ipchains. ahhh those were the days.
