Ok i was driving on the highway going about 55 when my oil light comes on for about a half a minute, then about 5 minutes later a loud bang comes from the Engine (dont know if it was the engine but it came from under the hood) and the car completly dies. There was no smoke, no nothing. My brother in law checked it out, it had plenty of oil, and coolant everything. Now it wont start at all when we try to start it it just clicks. We can hear the starter hitting the engine but thats it nothing happens. Can any one help. Oh and the oil smells burned. Do you think the engine is done for??? Any help.

The oil light monitors oil _pressure_. When it came on for about half a minute you should have stopped the vehicle immediately ( in the breakdown lane ) and turned off the engine. This could have been caused by an oil pump failure, or blockage in the pump pickup tube from gelling ( if antifreeze gets into the oil, this can happen, but that's another story ). At any rate, you lost oil SUPPLY to your engine and it's vital internal parts, because of restricted or no oil FLOW. That means your journal bearings on the crankshaft, piston rings, camshaft, everything went without oil in sufficient supply for a LONG TIME. When that happens, friction takes over and the metal parts grind against eachother creating heat, warpage, and ultimately engine failure. The noise you heard could have been a piston rod breaking off, or a number of cylinders seizing up in the bores. At that speed you were running at least at 1500 to 1800 revolutions per minute, multiply that by 5 minutes, and that's the end of your engine. I suspect it is toast. In both the figurative and literal sense. Sorry to have to say that, but now is a good time to check your dealer warranty to see if you can get somebody else to pay for an engine replacement. This one is history, IMO. Lg |

Not to be the bearer of bad news, but my brother in-law had the exact same thing happen. The motor had seized up due to the oil pump breaking. He had to put a new motor in it.
