Thinking about getting an A4

hey, i've been thinking baout getting an A4 and i figured i would start here before i started looking and test driving. i was just wondering if there are any perticular models or types that i should stay away from and what took look in hte way of problems if i do test drive some. i'm planning on getting between a 96 and 99 so i can have some money left over to mod it up a bit. i definatly want a 5 speed and the quattro would be great where i live(Mass). thanks in advance and please feel free to leave any other info that you think i may find useful.

well youve come to the right place...weve probably got 100 threads on this subject...ill give you the simpleist run down i can...first there has to be a decision between the 2.8 V6 (96-01) or the 1.8T (turbo) inline 4 (97-present)...either way you go getting a new intake or exhaust wont get you too far...audis are made with quality parts to begin with so replacing those dont really do much...i dont know much about modding the 1.8T but basically a chip will do a lot and then after that a new turbo...as far as the 2.8 is concerned you have two options...the 96 and 97 12 valve engine or the 98-01 30 valve engine...go with the 30 valve...either way you go the best option is getting a supercharger...the only thing worth the money...however the price is 5 grand in both cases...i say go with the 30 valve because it starts with 18 more ponies (190hp) and has better mods available from more established companies...namely PES tuning...so in summary if you want to mod...go with the 1.8T...unless you can buy the car and afford an extra 5 grand for the supercharger...the 1.8T will get more power for less money...but you will have to spend more cash on it than your average tuner...but you will have a good car with either engine

MikeLee is right. The 2.8 30v seems to be the A4 of choice round here. You start of with more hp and get more with less hassle
