Headliner ideas

Ok, so now I am onto repairing my headliner, well actually replacing my headliner. My moonroof seal leaked and destroyed the foam header board the material is supposed to be glued to. I was thinking about just ordering a conversion kit that uses bows (metal rods) instead of the foam board. If anyone has any other ideas or knows where I can get a new foam board I would appreciate it.
Thanks

Re: Headliner ideas

Personally I do not like the vinyl and rod look unless it was in a 57 Chevy or something that is supposed to have it. If I were in your shoes, I'd be looking in junk yards for a decent board and replace the fabric if the color dosen't match.

if i were, you (and i have been in your position before), i would rather die. as long as you have patience this should be an okay task, maybe. but as for finding headliners, junkyards are the best place, and whatever you do, try to find the same color fabric. it is definitely not fun trying to replace the fabric so make sure the color matches.

Re: Headliner ideas

Or...
Find a local "hole in the wall" auto upholstery shop and see how much it costs to replace it. You might get lucky - it might be cheaper than you expect. For example, I got the headliner replace on a 1987 Suburban for $100.
It can't hurt to get quotes.

Wow. That would be cheap for a tiny car but is great for a Suburban. My local shop charges $200 for a headliner replacement. That does include the removal and reinstallation, though. It sounds like 89sselightning's headliner board isn't salvageable though. Hence the junkyard suggestions.

I replaced the headliner in my 93. It's not that difficult. $20 for 2 linear yards of material and $36 for two cans of 3M Super 90 spray adhesive. The hardest part was removing and reinstalling the board through the door by myself. A buddy would have been a handy thing to have so it could have been bent slightly.
