82 GT engine/head

i got a cracked head. well we are pretty sure it is. the car broke down on the freeway, and overheated.

turns out the freaking water pump imploded. then the head gasket went out (all at the same time).

so we replaced the gasket, and the pump, redid the timing and all that other jazz. but the car is still spitting out water from the exhaust and its in the oil. a few mechanics have gone over it and they say the same thing. cracked head.

so my question is:

who knows where i can get a replacment head, or engine for that matter without sacrificing my first born?

i got a 1982 toyota celica gt manual 5 speed. has a 22r engine.

thanks.

edit: oh, i did think about going to a junkyard/picknpull but i would have about a 50/50 chance getting a engine/head that is already farked up. then id be in the same position but out 150$.

Re: 82 GT engine/head

ive read a few things about being able to swap in other engines or heads and such. can anyone tell me more about that?

like what other engines (or heads) can i drop in my 82 celica without a lot of modifications.

2.4L 22R RWD Carbed sohc.

i found a few engines and heads on ebay. they say its a 22R or 22RE but from different years or from a 4x4 truck, etc. is there a difference between the different year 22Rs? 22RE? 4x4, does it matter?

ebay a good idea or not a good idea? they are not too bad in price, and some are rather close to me, which i could pick up and save a few hundred on shipping.

but the auctions end soon.

LC Engineering is nice and all but uh.... 22R (81-84) Street Long Block
Racer Net Price $ 2,964.39 before tax and shipping. $3k for an engine, I don't think so. Im not racing this old thing.

If I wanted to/could spend that much, I would just buy a new freaking car. Which I don't, and can't. Maybe I should have specified the range I am looking for, $800 at the MOST. For a head (which is all I need), or engine.

And I have done all the Google Searching I can bare to. But I'm sure there are a few places not googled, that I did not see, or do not have web sites that some of you know about.

Re: 82 GT engine/head

i have a 83 celica parts car, the head seems to be fine, i also have a 85 celica head thats rebuilt but they are both from fuel injected cars. 1 is a dual row timing chain and the other is single row i don't know if you can swap out the heads or not but this gives you something to think about if you cant find one

got one from pick n pull. $100 bucks. Had it machined and tested. 100%. Car runs better than before. While I was there grabbed a new intake too.

The problem is not that your head is cracked, it is WARPPED. Get it milled and your problems should be fixed. It is about $50. it would then be a good idea to take it and have it pressure tested at a machine shop that can do valve jobs. This will insure that there isn't anything else that could be wrong.

I had the same thing happen to me and that is all i had to do. Saved me BIG $$$$$$$$$$.
