Considering a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee
I have been giving a look at a few 1999 jeep grand cherokees. I was wondering if you feel that there are any mileage barriers that I should steer away from, ie most grand cherokees run into a problem at xx,xxx miles.
I have read mixed reviews on the 1999 models. Some love the car, while others say that maintenance is extremely high on the car. I am considering this as a replacement for a 1998 ford explorer sport. The ride and comfort shift will be amazing :-) |

I own a 99' GC and love it. I wouldn't say there are any real mileage barriers to look for. Remember 99 was a model change year so there seem to be a few more problems than with later GC's but less than the previous generation. Common major problems seem to be electrical ie fuel pump, climate control, sensors, ECU's and issues with the full-time transfer case. Being a former Explorer owner myself I don't think you will be disappointed at all with a GC. The Jeep has a much more solid drivetrain than the Explorer. Just try and get as much history on the specific GC you are looking at and you will be fine.

99' GCL here, with almost a hair's thickness of 140,000 mi., with the only real issues (for me anyways) of: left turn hesitation (will get a new gas cap and see if that solves it), putting into reverse tranny "clunk" (known Jeep problem) but nothing serious.
That's been my "problems", but again, nothing out of the ordinary. I'm hoping it will go to 200,000 mi. |
