Exclamation who knows more than i do

last october i bought two Kicker CVR10's.. for the past few months i have been very pleased with the set up and how it sounds. last week the left sub developed a rattle when i crank up the sub. it still gave sound but sounded like something on the inside of the sub. i took it out to see what the other sub sounded like alone and a few days later that one started to rattle. is this a problem with the subwoofer or is it an amp problem. i was told i could have something to do with the amp.. anybody have a clue?

List specifics of your setup. The amp brand/model, HU, your box. Anything that can help these guys figure out what might be wrong.

the head unit is a panasonic 50Wx4, amp is kenwood 800W (kac-7201) . the box sits in the small trunk of my camaro and both subs are separated from each other by a wall...

Re: who knows more than i do

if its like a scratch/ratte it may be aboutto blow or one of the voice coils has already blown and is dragging agiasnt the motor structure. take it out and move the speaker with your hand, if you will hear it it is about to go or one coil already has.

yea. im not sure but i think they both have blown. .. if a speaker is blown, does it still give sound? i was under the impression that if it blows then it doesnt work anymore.. my subs still give sound but at a higher volume level it starts to have a loud rattle, not so much like a scratchy sound but like metal on metal tapping. hard to explain... thanks for the imput tho

Re: who knows more than i do

once a speaker os blown it won't play any more because there becomes a short in the coil..... you can however burn the coils so bad that they start to come loose from the former and scrape.......either was they're dead...... some other things to check would be the triple joint (where the cone former and spider meet. And whereever the spider connects to the basket.

Re: who knows more than i do

sounds like tinsel slap to me actually

take the sub out of the box and play it freeair (remember to turn down the volume, it's easy to overexcurt the sub with no box). If you can see the tinsels slapping up against the back of the cone then that's probably what it is. Try and bend them closer to the spider and play it again, if the problem is gone then that was it. It will most likely come back, but you can glue felt pads to the backside of the cone to keep it from being audible.

Re: who knows more than i do

it's the piece of wire between the terminal and the coil
