Brake line screw rusted into wheel cylinder
Hey, fellow Jeepers, gotta problem here. '92 Cherokee 4WD. I'm changing a leaky rear passenger wheel cylinder. I'm at a point of no return. I have to change this thing, and I have it all torn apart except the point of attachment to the break line. It's rusted to the wheel cylinder will not come out, no matter how much penetrating oil I have on it. As I see it I can cut the line at the nut and then hopefully attach another fitting and attach to the new wheel cylinder. My question: what kind of other options may I have, and if my plan is okay, how do I get another nut attached? Do I use a flare kit and/or use a compression fitting? Help!!

Re: Brake line screw rusted into wheel cylinder
Do you have a propane torch??
The line is probably rusted to the inside of the nut. If the nut is rusted too, you will have to heat it as well but first heat the line just outside of the nut while you work the nut back and forth a little at a time with a wrench. Not too far or you will twist the line right off. As the nut and line loosen, work the wrench a little further a bit at a time. The heat of the propane torch will not hurt the line. When you get it off, you may find that you need to replace the line anyway but at least you will have the chance to use the old one if it is ok. I have never had this method fail me yet, providing someone else hasn't twisted the line first. JD |

Re: Brake line screw rusted into wheel cylinder
Thanks, JD, I'll look into this method. I'm not sure the nut isn't too far gone already though...and I've rounded it off with all my attempts to get it loose. How hard is it to replace the line? Does it get replaced all the way to the master cylinder proportioning valve?

Re: Brake line screw rusted into wheel cylinder
On the '92 your line should go to a junction block that is bolted tot he axle housing. Depending which side, you should be able to take the old line to auto zone or advance and get a line the length you need, if not, purchase a flare tool and cut the line to the length you need, flare it and attach, just make sure your nut is on the line before you flare the tubing. Good luck.

Re: Brake line screw rusted into wheel cylinder
If the fitting is damaged that bad, just cut the line right at the fitting with side cutters. Then you can remove the line and measure for a new one.
