S10 Rear Swap Question

Is a complete rear from a 94 s10 Blazer a direct bolt on replacement for a 95 S10 Pick-up 2WD?

My sons 95 s10 pick-up has the 3.08 open rear that we want to replace with a posi rear with 3.42 or 3.73 gears. I have an auburn posi differential without gears that we planned to use while putting together another complete rear to make an easy bolt on swap. I just recently ran across another complete rear (Drum to drum) off a 94 Blazer and wonder if it'll fit and has the same bolt on dimensions to include the ABS connection. or any other issues I need to consider.

It will work perfect!! I put a 94 blazer rear in an 84 s-10. They are all the same!

Is the 94 a 4x4 or 2x4

The 94 blazer is a 4x4 where the rear is coming from. My son's s10 pickup is a 2wd. Also, would the 94 have the same connector for the ABS tone ring? I do realize that with the different gear ratio I would need to have the computer reprogrammed for the different gear and ABS.

If it doesn't work it'll only be a few bracket different, so then bring both rear ends to a welder and he can fix it up for you.

i had been thinking about doing the same thing with my 93 s10, but then i read that the 4x4 rear end is 4 inches wider than the 2 wheel drives. and the zr2 rear is 6 inches wider. that's why the 4x4 wheels are offset. so i ended up going o the slp performance website and buying a zexel torson rear end and swapping it out.

You are correct Woody. Just measured them and found about a 4" difference just like you said. Well, guess that was a waste of time and money. Guess I'll just try using the 342 gears out of it or just put the whole thing on ebay unless somebody here wants it (For what I got in it).

Why now just re-build your stock rear end using the gears, and posi unit from the other one.

It'll take a while getting all the proper back lash but a good shop manual will give you step by step instructions, and the company that you buy the new bearings from will also give you help over the phone.

out of curiosity, what was the width of the 4x4 rear end. Z06 wheels bolt directly onto the 4x4 rear end without adapters. I am in the process of picking up a 9" housing that will have to be narrowed and i need to know where to narrow it to. yes i know the 9" is heavy and overkill for a 2.2. but i will need it when i put my LS1 in

A friend of mine is using a built up S-10 rear end in his 500+hp Vega 1/4 mile car.

He was just using the stock rear end until this last summer without a problem, and he re-built it using thick aftermarket axles, and a comaro ring, and pinion. He had to get special bearings for the buildup, but they weren't too hard to get.

You shouldn't have problems with the origional rear end unless you have 12" slicks on your truck.

well, im the kind that is better safe than sorry. plus. getting the 9" housing for 50 bucks. i can have it in pretty good shape for about 500 bucks. w/o a posi or locker. which is fine for now.

Keep your money for a while, there are lots of ford 9" kicking around. You'll probably find one with a posi soon enough. And probably for the 50 bux range.

I've never gone under on with a tape measure, but a first generation Bronco is pretty narrow, and the rear end might be the right width reducing your costs even more.

I measured 53-1/4" from the outside of flange to flange where the backing plate mounts on the 4x4 rear.

I was hoping to use the housing to completely build and set up the rear in the garage during bad weather months. Then just swap it out when the weather gets better & truck down time is minimized. The garage is full of motorcycles & not enough room for a car or truck (Maybe a new garage is in order??) Done a few ford 9" rears in the past & got some books on properly setting up rears so don't expect any problems there. We'll just look keep an eye out for another rear housing & use this 342 gear.

Gene I have a customer looking for a 4x4 rear end right now but I need a 373 gear ratio I was told that all the 4x4 axels were 373 gears execpt ZR2 so if its 373 I will be very interested
