question about 540i

i am currently looking to buy a 540i and found one at a local dealership. However the one thing that bothers me is the check engine light stays on and also the headlights will not come on anymore. the dealer told me the light was working fine till is snowed her and when the roads got plowed the headlight got cracked and no won't come on. also he won't sell it till it gets fixed (which is good!) but so far no one can find out whats wrong with it. he has not yet taken it to a bmw dealship to see what is wrong. Is there anything thing else i need to watch out for on these cars and any clues on what could be causing those 2 problems? I don't want to get involved in something that ends up costing me more than the cars worth. any help is greatly appreciated
