2001 Suburban stock stereo

Hello, I have a 2001 Suburban with the stock Stereo. It does not seem to have the base it should. When I turn the base control it does not make much of a differance. You can tell when you turn it all the way up, but still doesnt have the base like it should. Anyone else have this problem? I also seem to have some engine noise in the speakers, not real noticiable, but you can hear a slight whine even when the radio is off. Nothing has beeen changed on the radio, all stock.
Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks
Jeff

Jeff,

Did you ever figure out what the problem was with the bass? I have a 2000 Tahoe (new style) with the same problem...turning the bass knob doesn't make much of a difference. It has the CD/radio unit with the tape player in the console.

My 1998 truck had the same radio/CD unit and it worked much better.

Thanks,
Scott

Scott,
Never figured it out yet.
How long have you had the problem with your radio? I bought my truck used, so I am not real sure how the radio was acting up for. Wonder if the radio it self is bad or maybe the amp??
I had a 99 tahoe and the radio in that sounded much better.

We just got the Tahoe, had the pickup for four years. It was a regular cab...maybe since it was smaller inside it sounded better?

I don't think they changed the radio in these trucks until the 2003 models. I really just need to compare it with a similar model to know if anything is even wrong.

I am not sure, when I had my Tahoe the radio sounded really good, I was thinking the same thing with the suburban, thought maybe because it was bigger, but since you have noticed the same thing, I doubt its that.

Jeff, your 01 should have awesome bass. I would check on the cables/fused links going to the amplified subwoofer hidden in the left rear of the vehicle.

If the stock radio is like the one in a 99, then there should be an auto tuner type button that lets you switch to country western, pop, rock...etc. push on it until it is turned off then adjust your bass. This should work for you...Jim

Mine has that switch but when turned all the way up is pretty muddled. There's a stock subwoofer in the back but I'm betting it's kind of cheap compared to what is available aftermarket.

I'm thinking Chevy really dropped the ball on these radios given how much they sell the trucks for!
