What is this thing called?
![]() I have asked many people but no one really knows. I photocopied it from my Haynes manual and it does not tell you. Only thing i can come up with is something with vacuum and has transmission fluid in it. When i went to the boneyard for one for my 91 the one there was filled with fluid. Does this have anything to do with the transfer case? P.S. BlazerLt i replaced the radiator cap with a Stant and the temperature still rises. I am wondering of maybe changing out the temperature sending unit as the coolant level has not dropped and it is not leaking. I also replaced my oil fill cap because the old one was shot and also went with Stant on that. When you goto replace the oil sending unit which from what i can tell is to the drivers side of the distributor and has about 5 wires going in it will you lose alot of oil and number two is it like the temperature sending unit a six point socket. The Haynes manual really does not inform you of this part just came across it when looking for the sending unit temperature and it was in a diagram. I am going to replace that (oil s.u.) with the oil anyway and use 10w-40 to see if that boosts the pressure at the 1000-1200 point. Thanks in advance for any help you may offer me on this. You always give out good advice. Also got that dang muffler up right before we went into deep freeze over the weekend and i did not get any hangers on it because it was hanging precariously and i had a leak from the troublesome pipe i shifted down to 2inch diamter and had to cut a 2 inch pipe open and put some fitters went all over the place for about 3 days and it fell out. Again thanks |

Re: What is this thing called?
well it is vaccum related but is should not have transmission fuild in it. Is your transfer case over full if so your front seal is bad on the transfer case letting ATF form you tranny overfill your transfer case.

I am pretty sure it is a vacuum reservior to to operate vacuum related accesories like vent ducts and the axle ingagement on 4x4s .mine was removed proir to my ownership but previous GMs have had them and they are only connected to the vacuum distribution fittings near the firewall . My vents change as I put the engine under a load(hills or Accelleration) and they return after I let off. It is rather annowing in the summer while running AC and it switches to my feet. But vacuum is stronger at an idle than at open throttle so it uses the unit then . Robert

Re: What is this thing called?
Yes that is the main vacuum for the 4 wheel drive system The transfer case vacuum switch has a line going to that plastic ball. If the transfer case vacuum is bad it could back feed trans fluid into it

On my '97, the vaccuum ball is mounted on the hood and the hose coming out of the bottom isn't connected to anything -- like it has been literally cut short for some reason.
Is the hose supposed to be connected to something? |

A 6" piece of hose out the bottom routes to the firewall and connects to a TEE. About a 10" length goes from the TEE to the TB for vacuum supply. A 2" piece goes to another TEE. From there, two pieces head down the fire wall to parts unknown (it's dark and cold out there, I'll look when nicer wheather comes along, - about 3 months from now) |

Re: What is this thing called?
i could not find where mine went to i saw it head behind the distributor and then from there i dont know where. i know today we got about 5 inches of snow first significant one of winter and that 4x4 was like drivin by the seat of ur pants. i put it in and it blew the radio off then radio comes back on but i dont feel engaged as im sliding all over the place so i goto 4x2 and its better then when i get home i get er into 4 low and im vibratin so iput er in 4 high finally but still sliding. there is no fluid in mine dry but im gonna check the connectors under the battery because that was wild goin sideways from a left turn leavin school. and the indicator inside doesnt turn on to tell you what ur in its like a light will blink then go off then if u bump the shifter it the light comes on but i have radio no blown fuses or nothin

Good. I don't feel so stupid now.
I have one exactly as in your picture on my 1994 S15 Jimmy 4.3L (Vin W) V6 Vortex auto everything. There is a 5/32" vacuum line that comes from the rear of the "Vacuum Sphere Reservoir " (that is what I am calling it until I get better info). I think it functions as a vacuum reservoir. This vauum line ends near the passenger side rear of the upper intake manifold. I couldn't figure out where to attach it, so I left it off. Anyone know where this is supposed to hook up on this year model? |

Hat tip to mkgearhead
"The ball is a vacuum reserve tank for when you lose vacuum going uphills or accelerating." http://www.s-seriesforum.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=65299
