Does anyone here now anything about computers?

My buddy came over yesterday, popped open my old crappy computer last night and added a 58x cd drive and another 3 1/2 floppy drive in it. Then he added bigger ram sticks and got it up to 128mb from the crappy 64mb that I was at. Now i can actually run age of empires 2 on there and it's great. Then he added 2 USB ports in it so i can now finally use my memory stick from tech school at home. He also said that I had a AMD K6 processor in it with a sound blaster card and a ATI graphics card.

I don't know much about computers internally, but I can program and do stuff most people can't do. But how does it sound? Is it a good computer? What else should I put in it? I seriously am starting to like this computer rebuild stuff so I might get into that as a hobby.

Re: Does anyone here now anything about computers?

K6 is an old processor. It's probably around 500 MHz, and that's pretty slow, considering the fact that we're past the 4 GHz mark. K7 were the Athlon XP, from 1700-3200, then there is K8 or Athlon 64 from 2800-4000. From what you just wrote, it sounds like you're pretty much at the max of what your computer can handle. If you want to do anything to it, you'll basically need a new computer. New stuff isn't going to be compatible with the stuff that you're currently running. For a few hundred dollars nowdays you can have a decent computer though.

Re: Does anyone here now anything about computers?

try www.ibuypower.com if you want to buy a customized desktop for cheap

try www.newegg.com for unbeatable prices and fast shipping on practically any computer component available on the market. Processors, cases, hard drives, ram, vid cards, sound cards, monitors, you name it, they have it cheap!

i used to have a K6-2 processor, 400mhz. Slow as heck...the intel celeron i have now that's 400 mhz ran better than that one did, but it might of been a cheap motherboard in the other one. Building computers is fun, pretty easy too, just plug and play basically depending on what your setup is.

You can setup a pretty sweet case and nice gaming system, just takes some time and you can pick out the parts you want, and you'll know your system in and out

Re: Does anyone here now anything about computers?

I know a lot about computers, and yours is crap, (no offense).

Average computers that are built or on the market today have 512RAM+, an AMD Athelon XP, or Pentium 4 usually clocked above 2.0 Mhz. The video cards at the MINIMUM have 64 megs of ram and most come with 128, and 256 are available.

Sound Blaster is way old school.

Its time for a new computer, if you don't know how to build them then I say you should go with Dell. Dell has good, non-expensive computers. And they have great warrenties as well.

For someone like you who might know software but not hardware, i would deffinatly buy one, and I recommend dell.

STAY AWAY FROM COMPAQ AND HP... they are cheap. HP is decent, but still cheap, and compaq is basicly as reliable as a Ford.

But if you have any questions you can PM me.. im an uber nerd....
