1990 Buick Regal

I have a 1990 Buick Regal with a v6 3.1L engine that has an electrical problem. When trying to start the car the car will crank but it will not start. I know that it’s not fuel related because I can smell fumes from the gas when ever I try to start the car… I can also here the fuel pump whirling just before cranking. I have already changed the Ignition control Module, and the Coil packs, so I know the problem does not lye there

The whole problem started when my wife came from out of a store and couldn’t start the car… she said that the car made it to the store without any problems, (except for a slight pause when idling at a stop light while going to the store.)

After changing the ICM and coil packs (which did not work) I thought that I had a bad computer, but now after reading a few post here I have a feeling that it might be a sensor to either the camshaft or crankshaft.

I’m stumped, and I need help in a worst way...

1990 Buick Regal

I recently had the same problem with my 90 Buick Regal 3.1. I replaced $900 worth of parts before calling a tow truck. It turned out to be the crankshaft sensor.

Re: 1990 Buick Regal

I'd be willing to bet crankshaft position sensor also. Common with 3.1 along with ICM's. Almost whenever these things suddenly don't start when they just ran fine 20 minutes ago it's either ICM or CPS.

Much appreciation for the reply, though I replaced the sensor back in Aug-Sept 2004, that was indeed the Problem... Thanks to other people’s post here I was able to track down the problem and eventually fix it. If only I could have gotten the people here to tell me how to locate CK sensor I could have fix the problem earlier then what I did, by a couple of months.
