COMPLETED: Airfix Peugeot 206 WRC 2002 Safari. 1:24

Hi all,

Well, this is my second finished model but my first progress/completion thread.

As some of you may know, I had a 23 year lay off from modelling, and am now trying to do it properly. I've learned tons from this site (thanks all, who have suffered my queries!!!) but am still finding it tough putting this knowledge into practice. But that's what it's all about....practice. One day, I'll have a worthy model!

Right, onto the kit. It's an Airfix kit (I know they're not the best manufacturer, but I managed to get a few of their kits at a steal!). 1:24 Scale Peugeot 206 WRC from 2002, Safari. Kit is reasonable. Easy to build but some pieces not fitting right (windows & bodyshell)

As you'll see with the pics that follow there are a few mistakes, but I have learned from them (I think!). For instance;

a) I didn't know at the time about sanding the bodies to get rid of mold lines so they are still there!

b) When I drilled the holes for the antenna I drilled one too many (so, now you know why my Pug has FIVE antenna!!)

c) Orange peel. My aluminium silver paint job was real nice but then I clearcoated it and it turned the silver into orange peel (too hot maybe?!) I left the silver for 14 days but maybe I should've left it for a month

d) No decals on the wheels. I messed these up so there was no alternative other than 'no decals'

e) Seatbelt decals not in right postition, hence I bought driver figures. No decals came with the drivers so they have been painted almost 'mechanic-engineer-like'

Overall I'm happy with this kit (for all it's mistakes!!), it's an improvement on my first kit and that's all I could hope for. As long as my next build is better than my last I'll get there.

Please feel free to criticise, question, comment, make suggestions or laugh. Just take it easy on me! I'm a learner!!

Here's some progress pics (in no particular order, I kept forgetting to take pics). My cameras not that good so the pics may be crap, also my limit for pics with AF is 80kb!!!

Doh!!! Dropped the shell after polishing and the filter fell off!!! Time for kristal klear!!

Aarrgghh! I hate fiddly decals. The small sharp parts of this decal are real flimsy. I had major trouble with these guys!

Here are the finished shots:

Hope you like!

Not bad at all for a Heller kit. I take it the wheel decals haven't arrived yet?

No. I didn't want to hassle you by asking if you sent them. Thought you'd forgotten! Well, I'll look out for them and add them when they arrive. Thanks

Yep, second car model in my lifetime. Previously I made a Focus WRC 01 (Airfix) last December. Before that I made airplanes when I was eight (you can only imagine how feeble those attempts were)

Thanx for the responses. Next up is a Tamiya kit. Ford Focus RS WRC 01 Monte Carlo

Superb Sticky Fingers. Your second model completed. Looks great, and looking forward to seeing the Focus WRC. Silver isn;t an easy colour to work with. And the drivers add more to the overall effect of the model.

I feel for you with building WRC cars and decasl etc though. Take a look at my progress thread for the complete mess I've made of a Impreza WRC.. Oh dear..!! So, hats of to you, and another one for the shelf..!!

Oh - Wheel decals, don't talk to me about these.. I've managed to stuff them up all two models so far. And I've also just stuffed up a seatbelt on my WRC tonight. But - I've got some spare decals from Tamiya Spares UK for £3.50..

Hi,

congratulations - very well done for a Heller kit (Building the Heller Citroen Xsara WRC some months ago I know what I´m talking about) and for your second car model.

Let some thin black colour run into the gaps around the doors, hoods etc. and you can improve the model.

(or even better: choose for your next model a kit that is manufactured in Japan - this avoids some stress :-))) )

Nice job, I haven't heard many good things about heller/airfix kits.

They arrived yesterday morning! Thanks a lot RallyRaider. Haven't had a chance to put them on yet. Will update the thread once I have.

Bit chunkier than the original decals but they'll look better than the naked alloys I have at the moment.

Once again, cheers!

And thanks to everyone else for their kind words!
