Tranmission Cooler & Filter Installation

Hi,

I know this subject has been covered in a past discussion and I read it already ( Thanks for the info ) . But I didn't notice or read " IF" anyone bothered to upgrade the system with an aftermarket " FILTER " installation.

I will be looking for someone ( Mechanic/Shop ) to install both a " Cooler & Filter system " made by " B & M " and maybe using some braided steel lines " IF " its possible.

" IF " someone has already done " BOTH " where did you decide to install/mount the " FILTER " .

Any suggestions on the " Filter " mounting area ???

Re: Tranmission Cooler & Filter Installation

What's with all the " EMPHASIS " anyway?

I installed the Permacool filter kit, and a B&M cooler, on my Xterra. I mounted the filter boss below my right headlight behind my bumper, but I have an aftermarket bumper and I don't know if there is space behind the stock one for it. I drilled 3 holes in the sheet metal for the screws, but you MUST be extremely careful when doing so as there are some major portions of the wiring harness on the other side. Removing the radiator overflow tank was the answer so I could see and temporarily move the harness clear.

I've got some pictures somewhere, I'll try find them and remember to post 'em.

There really weren't any real obvious vertical surfaces to mount the filter base to. I considered mounting it inside the right front wheel well, but decided against it.

Sorry for all of the " Emphasis ", but it seems like a simple question has led to some nasty response's over some simple miscommunication

I try to read everything posted on a subject (twice) , before asking a question or posting a response !

That said, thanks for the info !

Re: Tranmission Cooler & Filter Installation

Here are the pics. I didn't plumb the cooler in initially, but you can see where I mounted it, just a matter of moving the return line to the top of the cooler and running a short line from the filter output to the bottom of the cooler to add it in later.

Rather than run the hoses under the front crossmember for fear of potential damage off-road, I ran them up alongside the radiator and through a notch I made in the fan shroud:

Here's the filter location. Partially obscured by the hoses just to the right of the filter is one of the stand-offs that the grille clips to. I don't use that one or the corresponding one on the other side, they're too damn much trouble to get to and I've had my grille off several times. I did tuck the hose under the stand-off before re-installing the grille though.

Here's the view from the back of where I mounted it, coolant overflow tank removed. Notice the 3 screws poking through and the wiring just below them (which has been temporarily freed of its clips to the body)

Another shot of the filter location from the side/below:

You could mount it about 6" lower than that with ease, but I didn't like how the bottom of the filter was more exposed to potential damage. Note the bent sheet metal just forward of the body mount!

I installed the Trans cooler and love it's performance. My Autometer Trans temp gauge has shown as much as a 30-40 degree drop in temp above 40mph. Next I'll install the Permacool Trans filter kit.

I use their dual oil filter relocation fit and run 2 K&N oil filters with that. I run Royal Purple 5W30 and have been very pleased with how long the clarity of the oil last.

Also looking into a single small spin on remote coolant filter. The trucking industry has used those for years. This certainly has to help with the overall longevity of the system.
