I need help with my '93 Bonneville.
For awhile I was having problems--the service engine soon light would randomly flash and the rpm gauge would fluctuate, but nothing to big. My driving or the car wasn't affected by this. The other morning it was really cold and I stepped outside to start my car. I turned my car on, and it ran for a few minutes heating up. Then all of a sudden, it turned off. The lights inside were still on. We jumped it, and it started up fine. Then two days later I was driving and I was on the highway going past a semi-truck when the light came on and dinged at me. IT immediately flashed off and the only problem was it didn't accelerate smoothly past the truck. But altogether, it accelerated in the end. A few more times on the ride home it dinged at me, and the light flashed on for a half a second and went off. No problems with the driving though. Then this morning, it started perfectly fine again. On my way to classes, it would ding at me periodically and the light would flash for a half a second. This happened about three times. I had it brought in to Autozone...they said probably a problem with the air/coolant sensor. That was a month or two ago. This may be irrelevant but my blinker sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. That and my windshield wipers no longer dispense fluid altho it is full. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

Re: HELP!!! 1993 Bonneville
To me this is a very close duplicate of the EGR valve problem. THis is typical and not a "severe" problem. If so, you will have one of these codes: 53/54/55/56.
THis is easy : the OBD1 diagnostic plug will look like this: www.avigex.ca/xport/plug.jpg with connctors A,B, and M(under A). If different it is either second series OBD1 or OBD2..that require to be read with a scan tool . If plug similar, then: Jump together diagnostic plug connectors A and B with a small wire TUrn key ON CEL light will blink code 12 3 times (one ulse of light then 2 pulses, 3 times) then will start giving the codes, if any, like 23 will be 2 pulses, then 3 more..Once finished, it returns to code 12. codes here: www.avigex.ca/xport/3800codes.jpg The EGR valve is a good candidate because since there are several combinaisons of the 3 sections commanded by the computer, when the faulty section is not required, the CEL light will extinguish, and come back only when the bad section is required to operate. Since this is a frequent problem, check for it first before investigation more difficult options such as MAP (Mass Air FLow sensor) or TPS Throttle positon sensor...the latter one will bring codes anyway (22/23 I think) Finally, because you have other seemingly unrelated problems, the "ground" problem (several threads on that on this forum) under the driver seat must be seen as a possibility too. |
