back liftgate won't stay open!

The back liftgate of my 96 GCL won't stay open! How do I go about replacing those things that hold it up????? How much are they and since those are original "mopar" parts would another brand be better?

Re: back liftgate won't stay open!

You can get the (lift struts) from advanced auto for about $20-25ea. i'd imagine the mopars are significantly more. as far as removing them i dunno if yours is like my 99 but it appears that you need to find a big torx bit to unbolt them and as long as you have someone you trust to hold the thing up it shouldn't be hard.

I have a 94 Same problem but haven't repalced yet. You will need a torx socket (not bit on mine) and then lower end is just connected by a clip just pull the clip and pull the jointed end off.

mine doesn't stay up whenever it's below 60. and doesn't have enough pressure to stay up whenever I have my bike rack on (no matter how hot it is.

Keep an old hockey stick in there to keep it open. That works for me.

Re: back liftgate won't stay open!

advance auto didn't have an inventory list. I will call them directly in the morning. And yes - I have been using the old tried and true broomstick but it's getting a little old! Thanks for the suggestion and the Torx info.

It takes a inverted torx to remove.

I used a 1/4" socket, it worked just fine.
