Re: ranger top speed
No way the top speed is 130. On a 98 the governor stops the truck at about 100 mph. I don't know what his truck should get for gas mileage, but my 98 Ranger 4.0 L gets about 18 mpg. Hope this helps your dispute with you friend. If you want him to prove to you that his truck goes 130 mph, have him take you to a long stretch of road (free of cops) and tell him to see if it will go 130. And sit back and laugh when the governor shuts it down at about 100.

I have a 2000 Ranger with the 3.0L V6 and have had the truck up to 110 mph. Once you reach 110, the computer cuts the fuel and retards the spark. The engine feels like you have a bad fuel filter. Trust me, with All Terrain tires there is no way he gets 30 MPG. And at 130 MPH those tires would probably begin to fly apart, they are in no way rated for speed like that. All terrains are typically rated for 85 MPH max (it tells you on the sidewall). Now, if he is running a Ken Belle supercharger (if they even make one for a 2.3L), 110 octane gas, and has had the brain reprogrammed, MAYBE he could hit 130 on a good cool day with good tires rated for speed like that. But with all that equip, 30 MPG is out of the question. So tell your buddy to stop blowin' smoke up everyones ass and get real. It's only a Ranger man, it ain't a Lightning.
P.S. With my 3.0 completely stock (auto trans), I get 25 MPG (tops) on the highway with tires inflated to max pressure, 93 octane gas, and the tailgate down. |

Re: ranger top speed
FYI you get better gas mileage and less air resistance with the tailgate up. if you think about it, the tail gate being down woil lcreate a vaccume. up it will create a little air bubble in the bed. just thought would add this. but a toneu cover will yeild best results.

I had my 95 4.0L 4x4 up to 115-120, and that was a white-knuckle experience
