I recently bought a 2000 SLT+ 5.9L, and I love the truck so far- except for the lower-than-expected gas mileage. I purchased the truck from a family member, who maintained it in tip-top shape (it has 60K miles, and looks and drives like new) and he dealt with all the first few years worth of problems. He said he was getting around 12 city and 16 hwy, but the best I can manage is about 9.8 city (per the trip computer) Does anyone know how accurate the mileage computer is on these vehicles? I am tempted to start keeping my own mileage log to see if I am getting more than the computer states. I have a friend with a 99 Ram 1500 w/the same motor, who swears he gets 2+ MPG more with a K&N air filter. Does anyone know if the K&N really improves MPG?

bad mpg
Most all the Durangos have a low/bad MPG. I bought a 98 Durango and it gets 12-13 thats it. Well good luck.

Re: MPG low on 2000 SLT+ 5.9L
I have a '99 2wd with the 5.9 and installed a K&N filter and Jacobs ignition. Before it got about 12 mpg and after it got 14 or better. It was a low mileage truck when I did the mods and after it got a past about 35k it got even better, around 15 to 17 mpg is what I get now depending on where and how I drive it. Seems to get it's best mpg running about 75 to 80 on the interstate highways.
