electrical problems

The other day smoke started coming out of the dash, the radio freaked out, and the car died. I was able to restart it but I have to keep the rpm's up. The top blew off the battery, my radiator fans and windshield wipers are stuck on. No fuses were blown. I have already replaced the alternator and battery. Need help please.

Re: electrical problems

sounds like it could be your ecu but i havent seen them do this before. they are a known problem with 1g's though and can cause all kinds of problems when they go bad but usually teh car wont run

I have found several wires grounded one on the ecm , but only when the key is on. Tested ignition switch, it is ok.

Re: electrical problems

check vfaq.com for the pinout diagram for the ecu. you can also take out the ecu and open it up to see if its burnt and shitty inside. i just noticed you have a 2G so its not as likely that its the ecu.

is your CEL (check engine light) lit?

No cel, there is another black box directly underneath the steering wheel. It is hooked into the door locks, and has a program button. It is toasted. This is my first dsm, I have no idea what the box is.

Sorry my connection is slow i didnt think my reply posted. My scanner is broken, but the box is about 5"x5", no writing other than the schematic for the pins. It looks OEM.

Re: electrical problems

does it have a mitsubishi part number on it. if it has one you can order one from the dealer wjust give them the number. you can also look up the number online and can probably figure out what the part is

Fuck that. You should be able to find an ECU from a 1996 that someone upgraded to an Eprom. If you do replace the ECU you may want to think about doing the Eprom upgrade.

Here is one, only $76
