Re: ecu swap?

No, but if you got something like an Apexi AFC; you might see a few hp gain along with the use of basic bolt-ons (intake, header, and exhaust). But on a stock motor, a new ECU will more than likely just kill your gas mileage.

Re: ecu swap?

if it's one of those $20 ones on E-bay then it's a rip off, it will just eat your gas. Always remember it something that is really cheap like; that says it will give you a boost in hp, then it's too good to be true.

Re: ecu swap?

Those chips typically just advance your timing and dump more fuel into the mix. You'll gain more power, but you'll run rich and risk detonation.

Just be careful and keep an eye on how it runs.

Whats a TBS?

and you mean run lean and risk detonation.

Re: ecu swap?

I thought running too much fuel was rich and not enough fuel was lean? Maybe I'm mixing that up and the amount of air it's using?

Either way, it can cause detonation and that's not a good thing.

Re: ecu swap?

Look into Turboedit (OBD0) or Uberdata (OBD1) if you want to start getting into ECU mods

TBS is a throttlew body spacer.... goes in between the throttle body asnd intake manifold and spins the air as it enters the intake manifold
( and makes a really cool sound between shifts_

No you're right, I think he just ment that it's the motor running lean that causes detonation and not running rich.

But the T-Body spacer will only give you a better fuel mixture, it won't add more air (which is what you'd really want to do). If you chip the ECU, you could (like Plastic_Fork said) add too much fuel. And that could flood your engine with gas, which would be a bad thing.

Re: ecu swap?

rich mixtures resist detonation. lean mixtures are prone to detonation.

rich mixtures are safe mixtures. lean mixtures are dangerous mixtures.

I always called it the throttle spacer, but, still makes sense.

rich mixtures tend to bog the engine. lean mixtures tend to perform better.

what you want is to be in between.

rich mixtures resist detonation because they cool the mixture before it enters the engine and promote lower combustion temperature

lean mixtures arent always dangerous mixtures, it depends entirely on how much load and to a degree how long you are exposing the engine to lean mixtures before it will start to ping. I can idle my car nicely at 16.0-17.0 afrs and no pinging or dangerous detonation will take place. light load and partial throttle crusing can be leaner as well, 15.0 - 15.5 afrs and the honda engine generally likes this and you get GREAT gas mileage this way.

Honda tunes everything from the factory for safety and the meet the best possible emissions standards. This is of course not the best for performance or fuel economy.
