96 grand am cooling fan

I am here with another question on my 96 Grand Am. It seem the cooling fan stays on even at cold start ups, and right when I start it up in the morning, stays on all the time as far as I can tell, I do whatever work on my cars that I can before taking it in for work. Think it could be a temperature sensor? The temp gauge in the car is always in the normal range, the longest I have driven it was about a half an hour at a time in stop and go traffic, and it didn't go out tof the normal range. I have never owned a car that had the cooling fan run all the time, Is this common? Let me know what you guy's think I would appreciate any help.

Thanks

Thel

Re: 96 grand am cooling fan

Weren't you the guy that had the temp staying at 100 degrees all the time? If so, then it deffinately sounds like a bad sensor - apparently your car thinks that it's suppose to kick in the fan and move coolant @ 100 degrees.

Yeah, I with ride here, the cooling fan is electric and sensored-triggered to turn on. With it running all the time, not normal. Temp. or fan sensor is your culprit.

Re: 96 grand am cooling fan

Are you running the front windshield defroster? If the defroster is on it will kick the A/C Compressor which will turn on the cooling fan.
It will also do it if the A/C is in the on position/

Just a thought...

Re: 96 grand am cooling fan

^ ^ Hey good point dan - I think it does that also if the fan position is in the "max" toward your face position. I heard that if it's in that blower direction that it runs the A/C compressor, so might wanna make sure it's pointing at your feet too.

Re: 96 grand am cooling fan

I do believe you are right, Sir Ridenour. All done in an effort to keep the A/C compressor seals lubed. I guess it beats replacing a compressor every summer.

Re: 96 grand am cooling fan

Is your check engine light on? when i had a EVAP (P0440) and my check engine light was on, my colling fan would run all the time. And when i replaced a broken EVAP line and cleared the code the fan operated normally. just another suggestion

Thanks Hoags,

I did have the windshield defroster on all the time the fan was on, I switched it to floor and the fan went off, easy fix, I should have known better. Thanks again,

Thel

Re: 96 grand am cooling fan

I'm glad it was something so simple, I love those cheap fixes. I've done the samething in the past and believe me it won't be the last. at some point you will wonder why the fan is staying on. Then it will hit you like a ton of bricks.

Take care,
Dan
