Car, 95 4.6 v8 tbird. 127K miles
Problem (2 days ago) when the car is given just alittle gas, either in revers, or drive, it would buck, and studder-just like it was going to stall. It did stall twice when i was merging onto a street. After looking over the enitre engine, i figured it was either the fuel filter, or air intake. Went to autozone, the guy did a free scan for me, and it came up as the problem being my mass air etc. He sold me a spray to clean the throttle body/plate/intake etc. When i removed the entire intake, and checked everything, i notice 2 things, 1 is that my mass air sensor had a glob of dirt/mud on it, 2, the throttle body's plate was badly gummed up with carbon/crap etc. I cleaned the entire intake, maf, temp sensor, hoses, and cleaned up the intake part of the throttle body (right at the plate) really good. The problem is gone, the car runs much better, AND feels more responsive. Now, my check engine light is still on, i already disconnected my battery to reset the ecu, but after like an hour, the check engine light stays on. Nothing else is wrong with my car, no other codes etc. BTW, how the hell does the throttle opening get so dirty..? and the maf sensor..? I've had the car for like 7 months, changed air filters religiously also. Maybe the guy who owned it before me had an old air filter, or had none in there for a reason i don't know. I never checked to see if the maf sensor, or throttle was dirty till yesterday also. I'll keep an eye on those now :-) |

Re: Help..Check engine light, how to shut..?
Ask the Autozone guy to reset the MIL. You still have a stored code(s) causing the MIL lamp to be on.
Your 94 - 96 T-bird 4.6 is OBD II compliant http://www.actron.com/media/categori...128_CP9131.pdf The check engine light cannot be extiguished by disconnecting the battery. An actual hexidecimal code must be recieved by the ECM in order to extinguish the light. You will need a scan tool or someone with one. Cheap OBD II code readers can read codes and extinguish the MIL. They can be purchased for as little as $40. For $200(not including a $50 used Palm PDA) or so on ebay you can get a full blown handheld scanner from Auterra that will even do the new CAN protocol. These new scanners from Auterra and others will record and graph sensors and really help you troubleshoot OBD II compliant vehicles (ALL 1996 and later) Worth every penny if you own a small fleet(I am blessed with multiple teenagers) of out of warranty cars as I do. |
