GM Protection Plan???
I'm considering the GM Protection Plan. Anyone have any advice/opinions? I've seen plenty of people encounter problems with their yukons -- mine is only 4 months old and has already been in the shop 3 times.
Please let me know your thoughts -- It's seems better to self-insure, but I'm curious if anyone has had major mechanical issues that were NOT covered under factory warranty that would have made the GM Protection Plan worthwhile Thanks!! Last edited by mapearso; 11-01-2004 at 08:32 PM. |

Gpp
I purchased it when I bought my Denali Brand new, they just replaced my drive shaft at 42,000 miles, it was not covered under the warranty, but the protection plan covered it, so the plan cost me $700 the drive shaft would have been $1300. I win, in this case.. Your situation may be different, unfortunatly I have a lot of problems with my Denali.

Re: GM Protection Plan
If you are going to purchase and extended warranty definately buy the GMPP major guard. I am a service advisor at a GM dealer and the other waranties available are royal pains in the a##es.

Re: GM Protection Plan
The GMPP seems to be the best bet, as far as minimal warranty-related hassles go...but it definitely ain't the cheapest. Anyone try the Chrysler one (IIRC they have one that covers vehicles other than those by Dodge/Chrysler)?

Re: GM Protection Plan
The Major Guard plan is what I purchased for my 2003 Yukon. Like others who have posted here, my Yukon (purchased new) was in the shop over a dozen times during my first year of ownership. I am on a first name basis with the service manager and my service advisor.

I've been getting quotes on the major guard. the guy told me it begins on the day I sign the contract, it does NOT get added on to my base 36/36.
ins't that stupid ?? or is this guy wrong?? |

Re: GM Protection Plan
The Major guard does start from when you sign the contract - it is not added to the 3 year/36K warranty.

then I have to wait until the truck has 35months or 35,000 miles on it. otherwise I'm doubling up my warrenty, which serves me NO purpose.

Re: GM Protection Plan
DO NOT wait to purchase the GMPP. You will be paying for benefits not received if you wait as suggested. Most important reason … GM provides a “New Vehicle Limited Warranty” and the GMPP is a “Coverage Agreement”, difference is “With Major Guard, virtually every component of your vehicle is covered in the event of mechanical failure beyond the warranty period – even if it results from wear and tear. If is not on the short list of what’s not covered, it’s covered”. In addition to rental car access for over 2 hours of labor repair, other protections are in effect such as roadside assistance, alternate transportation, and tire hazard. You will received these benefits in addition to the standard limited warranty for the entire 100K (i.e., over and beyond coverage). Be careful of 3rd party coverage, as most of the Internet cheap-o-sites I found did not include computer and high-end electronic coverage (NAV, DVD, stab system, etc.)
IMHO only, if you spend 55K on a vehicle, don’t you want to have the dealer “just fix it” if something goes wrong? |

why should I double up my warrenty??
it makes no sense what so ever. the GM warrenty is 36/36. Not 100,000K miles as you said. I don't need 2 warrenties at the same time. that is totally pointless, and a waste of money. I will add on another 36 months, when my first 36 months are about to expire. but I won't buy a warrenty when I am already covered from the factory. |

Re: GM Protection Plan
Good question, maybe I’m not being very clear. GM’s warranty is indeed 36/36 … one of many term options for GMPP is 72/100 – which is not in addition to the 36/36. Therefore one could be lead to believe that you are only buying another 36 months and up to another 64K miles. NOT the case. First, the total period, for my vehicle, is from buy to 72 months 100K miles (extra benefits start with purchase). Second, the price will be the same if not more $$ later (inflation) for the same “additional coverage” – why not buy now? Third, the GMPP is NOT the same limited warranty, but rather a protection agreement with added benefits. So, you may have out of pocket expenses (under the GM factory 36/36) for repairs that would have been covered by the 72/100 GMPP. Apples/Oranges … again be cautious on 3rd party warranty extenders – I’m been down that road as well … simply put, you get what you pay for.

with the factory warrenty, there are NO out of the pocket expenses. they fix my truck, period ended, done.
you still don't see my point about the time limit. there are 12 more months left on my factory warrenty. if I buy a GMPP 36 month warrenty now, I am truely only getting 36-12=24 months of GMPP, cause I will have double coverage for the next year. GMPP goes from when you sign the contract. so if I buy a 36 month contract now, I don't need it for another year casue I'm covered by the factory warrenty. so why pay for something I don't need. you case is different because you brought the warrenty when the truck was new. if you buy it later on like I am, it's a different senerio. and something is making you believe the GMPP is better than the factory warrenty? that is no so. the factory warrenty covers EVERYTHING, where as the GMPP has certain exclusions. if you blow out a shock, GMPP will NOT cover you. |
