Break in period

I am getting my new SL600 next week. I know you are not suppose to go over 85 miles per hour and over 4500 RPM's.

The question is: For how long do you do this for?

Any help would be appreciated.

I believe it is 1K miles. Most of the break in issues is due to drive train rather than engine. I think there is also something in the manual about limiting RPM.

The most important tip is; don’t use cruise control, don’t drive constant speed, don’t lug the engine. While most people don’t mention this, stay out of heavy traffic. Running cars that are meant to go 100+ need some speed.

Cars can develop a memory during break in and will run smoother at a given RPM. Varying speed and RPM also helps with engine break in; primarily the rings.

Best would be to take a trip up or down the coast, highway one. Trip to Origin would be perfect. By the time you get back the car will be broken in. Loop down one to Santa Barbra and back up 5 would also be great. Leave cruise control off the whole time.

Last thing is; don’t let the temps get high.

Have fun.
