96 to 93 Jeep Grand Cherokee Wheel Bearing/Drive Shaft Swap

Hi everyone,

I am new to the Automotive Forum. I have read many of the postings and answers here, and I must say it is great place to get answers. I am not very mechanically inclined but I learn quickly and try to so some work myself.

Now that I am a member, I am weighing in with a question of my own.

My Vehicle:

93 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, 5.2L Quadra-Trac 8 Cycl., Automatic.

Question:

I am wandering if I can swap the Wheel Bearing hub and Drive Shaft from a 1996 Grand Cherokee Laredo (part time 4 wheel drive, 6 Cycl.) to fit my 93 JGC?

Would there be a problem with my diff gears lining up with the Axel shaft?

Is there a difference with the type of metal forged to use with either drive shaft?

Note:

The 96 JGC Laredo does not have CV Boot; My JGC does. Would it matter if I changed to this type of set up on mine?

Any insight to my situation is welcomed.

Thanks.

Hi,

I own a 94' Grand cherokee limited w/ 5.2 L. V8.
I have replaced both CV axels on my 94' and to my knowledge the 96' Larrado and your 93' Limited have the same Dana 30 front axel.
Both the 96' and the 93' should have the same CV axel w/boot. There should'nt be any problem inerchanging the axels. I called a parts store,
the 96' and 93' have the same part # 3220.

If your axel on the 96' has no boot it is either a CV axel with a missing boot, or it has been switched over to a u joint axel.
Make sure your not missing a boot because a boot that is even cracked or broken will cause damage to your CV joint.

I hope I have been a help.

Re: 96 to 93 Jeep Grand Cherokee Wheel Bearing/Drive Shaft Swap

Hi Mark,

Thanks for your reply and comments.

This is great information.

The axel on the 96 is actually a U-Joint set up. I am happy to hear they will fit my 93.

Couple additional questions:

Since both the 93 and 96 have Dana front axels, would the differential also be the same Dana (pinion and bearings)? I am considering using the diff from the 96 in my 93.

Lastly, I just wanted to clarify if the Wheel Bearing Hub on the 96 3 bolt pattern will fit on to my 93?

Thanks again, your information was very helpful.

The 96 & 93 diff. are both the same if Iam right. The axle in the 96 that has a U Joint must been a upgrade or came out of a Cherokee. The stock Axle is a cv. boot. The Hub should interchange with no problem.

To check if the drive shafts should match the only way to tell is to match them up for length and shaft end connections.

How complete is the 96 set up? It might be easier to just swap axles and not even screw around with all the shafts and differentials. You might have to swap out the yoke though. I think the 96 came with a CV front driveshaft. Do you have the complete 96 axle?

Possibly. The 4.0 came with 3.55 std and 3.73 optional. The 5.2 came with 3.73 std. The differential tag should tell you what the ratio is. If you have to swap gears then it probably isn't any easier.
